Blink : The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without ThinkingBlink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell
4 stars. I really like it.

tl;dr – Lot of interesting stories to learn a lot of things about how our mind works while making decisions.

My sister, mother and I were having breakfast today morning.
I took a sip of tea – and within half a second my sister asked me “today also you didn’t like my tea?”
“Yes”, I said, “just look at its colour, it doesn’t taste good from its colour itself”
“Mummy,” she said looking towards mother, “from tomorrow you will make tea for your son, he doesn’t like mine”

She knew I didn’t like tea before I said anything – she read my face.

Silvan Tomkins once began a lecture by bellowing, “The face is like the penis!” What he meant was that the face has, to a large extent, a mind of its own. (Location 2515, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

You can hear your voice, but you can’t see your face. If we knew what was on our face, we would be better at concealing it. (Location 2522, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

I almost judged tea without even tasting it. I just made up a story of why I didn’t like it.

We have, as human beings, a storytelling problem. We’re a bit too quick to come up with explanations for things we don’t really have an explanation for. (Location 821, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

All of us do it everyday. We judged things before we should. It is not our fault – this is how we are.

Cheskin believed that most of us don’t make a distinction —on an unconscious level —between the package and the product. The product is the package and the product combined. (Location 1931, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

There are many other great insights in this book.
How autistic mind works vs How normal mind works? And when a normal mind becomes autistic?
How a salesperson without pre-judging his potential client from clothes, holds position of best salesperson since decade?
How quick decisions are different from normal one? And much more.

Ever wonder why you have difficulty in coming up with explanation when you are caught doing things you shouldn’t be doing? Because your heart rate increases.

“After 145,” Grossman says, “bad things begin to happen. Complex motor skills start to break down. Doing something with one hand and not the other becomes very difficult.… At 175, we begin to see an absolute breakdown of cognitive processing.… The forebrain shuts down, and the mid-brain —the part of your brain that is the same as your dog’s (all mammals have that part of the brain) —reaches up and hijacks the forebrain. Have you ever tried to have a discussion with an angry or frightened human being? You can’t do it. … You might as well try to argue with your dog.” (Location 2699, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

A question from this book:
A man and his son are in a serious car accident. The father is killed, and the son is rushed to the emergency room. Upon arrival, the attending doctor looks at the child and gasps, “This child is my son!” Who is the doctor? (Location 1473, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

This is an insight puzzle. It’s not like a math or a logic problem that can be worked out systematically with pencil and paper. The only way you can get the answer is if it comes to you suddenly in the blink of an eye. You need to make a leap beyond the automatic assumption that doctors are always men. They aren’t always, of course. The doctor is the boy’s mother!

When we talk about analytic versus intuitive decision making, neither is good or bad. What is bad is if you use either of them in an inappropriate circumstance. (Location 1747, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking)

A Mentor Knows

If you’re going “solo” with your career and you don’t have a coach or mentor then you’re playing at a gross disadvantage.

DON’T THINK.

I never thought to start a blog. Honestly, I didn’t even know how to write a leave application before few months. But I am a blogger now (or a writer? I don’t know). Without thinking. Without any analysis what will I write (which is not recommended though). I just jumped into it. As I have mentioned here that life changes. My life is changed, now I have to maintain a blog, with my job (hah! That rhymed; little bit).

Life is like Road Trip….

We move, we stop, we play songs and sing with it, we sleep, we eat, we make fun but yet most of the time we reach where we wanted to reach, just because we kept moving. This – “keep moving” thing is a root note of a road trip which we need to learn to attain success. There are lot more things in “Life” and its “success” which are metaphoric to road trip.

I feel very lucky for myself that I have friends who do not like to travel by train. They always prefer car. Also my father love road trips. And so I’ve been to road trip lot of times. Blending all my experiences of road trips, I am writing here that how the life and its success is related to road trip. And the things which we can learn from road trips. Continue reading

Try and think out of the box

This is the second and the final part of the series, “Think out of the box”.  You can check out the first one here to interpret meaning of it and why it is important to think out of the box.

In that post I committed to unravel about how to do it, so here I am to present few points which can help all of us in thinking out of the box.

1) To think out of the box, you should know what, how and where the box is.

To do some brilliant, extra ordinary, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious job in any particular field, you need to get into it.

know what the box is all about

Is it really important to “Think out of the box”?

Think Outside The Box (1920x1080) [Fixed]

To be successful you need to “Think out of the box” is what we are taught, so is it the absolute truth? Can’t you be successful without thinking out of the box?

For those who are unaware about it. Let’s first see what does “think out of the box” means, with help of 9 dot puzzle.

Here are 9 dots. And trick is to join all the dots, without taking pencil off the page. I recommend to give it a try.

Solution to this problem lies in exceeding the boundary created by the dots.

If you would have tried to solve this puzzle now or ever before then you might have realized that it is quite uneasy to think outside the box. But no need to worry, you are not alone. And this puzzle solely explains the meaning of thinking outside the box, and doesn’t help a bit to do so.

Coming back to our question, is it really important to “Think out of the box”?

Thinking out of the box somewhere means that think something innovative or new and which is of-course beyond the boundary. We have seen many successes where the ideas were not unique but the execution level and timing did it all. For example, Microsoft’s UI (i.e. desktop icons) based OS was actually the project of Apple, but because of its timing and great interface there are number of users who thinks ‘OS’ and ‘Windows’ is the same thing, like Google and Search Engine is same for many and again Google was totally inspired by Yahoo! but a better version and a better launch.

By seeing these examples you might think that it is not that important to think out of the box, but I would say that to achieve the increased level of ‘already existing’, one need to think and do something extra which brings them success, and it undoubtedly requires out of the box efforts.

Below diagram describes well the need to think out of the box.

think-outside-the-box

This diagram and the previous puzzle explain that problems are inside the box while its solutions are out of the box most of the time and to achieve it we need to move out.

And thus I would say, YES.

Everyone, whoever you are, whatever you do, there is a time when each and every individual has to think out of the box to shine, grow exponentially, achieve success and sometimes even to solve problems.

So now our hot question should be “how to think out of the box”?

It is so correctly said that by just saying or chanting “Think out of the box” doesn’t actually help in thinking out of the box. Then, how to do so?

To know how to think out of the box, you need to wait. Wait for my next blog post.

Till then, best you can do is – give feed-backs, share it,like it and if you like then subscribe my blog too.
